It’s an exciting time to be in the construction business.

As we move into the fall season, the Canadian construction industry is simply booming. Canada has remained in the top five countries globally for construction growth since 2010 and according to CanaData, it’s estimated that new construction investment in the country will exceed $300 billion by the end of 2014. From coast-to-coast, massive projects are underway particularly within the realm of transit, pipelines and power generation.

Within Ontario, it's estimated that infrastructure investments will reach $35 billion over the next three years. Eleven mega projects are already in the works such as the Pan AM Games projects, mass transit expansions and the Ontario Place Revitalization.

According to the 2014-2023 BuildForce Construction Trades Outlook, Alberta continues to lead the construction industry with a focus on oil sands and residential work while having doubled construction-related employment from 1997 to 2012. It’s also predicted that British Columbia will raise employment to record new levels by 2017.

In light of all this good news, the biggest challenge the industry will face is building a sufficient workforce: Build Force Canada predicts that by 2021, the construction industry will need a quarter of a million new people to replace retirees and keep up with demand.

According to the Canadian Construction Association, keys to overcoming this challenge include worker mobility along with a focus on innovation and technology. By doing more with less and operating efficiently at all stages of a project – design, build and operate – Canada will be in a strong position to maintain competitiveness on a global scale.

A simpler, more effective approach to concrete scanning

We can detect a range of embedded objects by scanning just a single side of concrete.

Drilling or cutting through concrete floors, walls or ceilings can be dangerous and costly if you don't know what lies beneath. The key to eliminating risk and project delays is to locate embedded features before you cut. Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) we can locate and image anything from wire mesh, post tension cables, conduits, utilities and more while determining rebar spacing and concrete thickness.

GPR offers the quickest and most cost-effective way to locate subsurface objects in concrete structures: results are available onsite and in real-time. Where required, our experts can then process the data and provide you with in-depth analysis for pre-design and engineering purposes.
