The Role of SUE in Tomorrow’s Transportation

Rapid Transit projects including LRTs (Light Rail Transit) and BRTs (Bus Rapid Transit) have become a key priority throughout the GTHA, as a solution to manage growth, ease congestion and prevent urban sprawl. As these projects are being built through highly congested areas, both above and below ground, one of the most complex challenges involves accurately locating existing utilities during the design phase and discerning whether utilities should be accommodated or relocated.

Decades ago, this process involved collecting utility records and assuming that they were accurate and complete with no formal verification process in place. Clearly this process, or lack thereof, included a wide margin for risk. To close this margin, most large transportation infrastructure projects including Rapid Transit now incorporate Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) at the design phase. It provides a standardized process to verify utility records and gauge completeness - removing the guess work and risk.

multiVIEW in the News
Last month, multiVIEW's Concrete Scanning services were profiled in the Ottawa Construction Association’s Construction Comment Magazine. The article discusses the advantages of GPR vs. X-ray technology for concrete scanning.
multiVIEW’s Subsurface Utility Engineering services were also profiled in a recent issue of the ORCGA’s Ear to the Ground Magazine. In the article, Kevin Vine, President of multiVIEW, discusses the critical role of SUE in the design phase of large infrastructure projects including the Union Station Revitalization.

Unique Applications of GPR Around the World
Around the globe, Ground Penetrating Radar is being used for far more than scanning concrete and mapping underground utilities.  It is also a key technology for uncovering information about our distant past. Here are some examples of the diverse applications of GPR from around the world:

Pictures From the Field
Using GPR to image concrete and map rebar on top of a parking garage in support of the Yorkdale Mall Expansion.
Combining techniques to ensure success - here, our Field Technicians use Hydro Excavation to clear a pipe prior to conducting a CCTV Camera Sewer Inspection.
Our Ottawa team has been busy carrying out Subsurface Utility Engineering (“SUE”) along a major highway in support of structure replacement. SUE facilitates the creation of an accurate utility composite to identify potential conflicts and inform the design of major projects.
